Semester System in Delhi University (DU)

Courses that follow the semester system:

  • Bachelors in Business Studies * B.A. (Honours) Business Economics
  • Bachelors in Financial and Investment Analysis
  • B.Sc. Computer Science
  • B.A. (Honours) Journalism
  • Bachelors in Mass Media and Mass Communication

How they function

  • Four papers are taught every semester
  • Exams are held twice a year, in December and May
  • Students study papers from other topics as well

The Vice-Chancellor has constituted the following Sub-Committees to look into the various aspects relating to Admissions, Examinations, Inter College and Inter University migration and to suggest suitable amendments required to be made in the relevant Ordinances of the University for implementation of the Semester System at the Under-Graduate Level in the University from the academic session 2010-2011: 1. ADMISSIONS (i) Dean, Students' Welfare (ii) Principal, Kamla Nehru College (iii) Principal, Dayal Singh College (Evening) (iv) Shri Ram Dutt, Deputy Registrar (Academic) The above committee will look into the admission related issues, namely admission schedule, combination of subjects, eligibility criteria, migration etc. and other related matters. 2. EXAMINATIONS (i) Dean of Colleges (ii) Dean (Examinations) (iii) Principal, Motilal Nehru College (iv) Principal, Kirori Mai College (v) Sh. P.K. Johar, Assistant Controller of Exam (Conduct) This committee will look into examination related issues i.e. conduct of Examinations, Tabulation of results, Secrecy, Evaluation, Promotion rules etc. with a special view to determining the practicability and adherence to time lines. 3. AMENDMENTS IN ORDINANCES (i) Pro-Vice-Chancellor (ii) Dean, Students Welfare (iii) Principal, S.G.T.B. Khalsa College (iv) Dr. Suman Verma, Jt. Dean, Students Welfare & OSD (Exam.) (v) Sh. Ram Dutt, Deputy Registrar (Academic) (vi) Sh. Daya Kishan Kandpal, Assistant Consultant (Colleges) The above Committee will look into the amendments which would be required to be made in the Ordinances incorporating various elements of the new scheme.

Will DU implement semester system in science & commerce from this year? DU administration has already decided to introduce semester system in science courses. For now, there is no word on commerce courses What will be the course structure under semester system? For science students, there will be six semesters in 3 years, covering 24 main papers, 6 allied papers and 2 inter-disciplinary subjects
