No IIT-JEE centre in Kota this year
Kota, the coaching cradle for the IIT-JEE, has suddenly been dropped from the list of locations where one of the toughest engineering entrance tests is going to be held this Sunday. Till last year, the Indian Institutes of Technology had at least eight centres in Kota alone, from where thousands of aspirants would write the test.
The IITs this year, however, have cited ‘‘sensitive security issues’’ and canceled all the centres in Kota. IIT officials refused to go on record but insiders said the decision to discontinue with Kota was taken after the head of the most popular coaching class entered an exam centre 10 minutes before JEE 2009 was going to start.
‘‘This coaching class owner walked in from the main entrance and came out of the back gate. There were a lot of parents who saw him enter the exam centre. A police complaint was also filed against him,’’ said a faculty who was on the IIT-JEE duty last year.
The coaching class owner reasoned he entered the exam centre because he was feeling uneasy and wanted to have some water, he added. Centres where the IIT-JEE is conducted are out of bounds for outsiders once the trunks full of question papers arrive there.
