Debate contest in Islamabad in February/ March,

UGC Subject:     Regarding Debate Contest in Islamabad in February/March, 2010. Sir/Madam,

The Ministry of External Affairs, SAARC Division has forwarded a copy of Note verbale No. SAARC/HTS/UGC.5 (copy enclosed) received from SAARC Secretariat regarding a Debate Contest to be held in Islamabad in February/March, 2010 that has been approached by Government of Pakistan.

Also, the Government of Pakistan has forwarded the following topics for the SAARC Debate Contest:

(i)                                Role of SAARC in promoting peace and harmony in the Region

(ii)                           Globalization and politics of economic restructuring in SAARC Region

(iii)                      Prospects of energy cooperation within SAARC

(iv)                        SAARC response to alleviate poverty in the Region

The Government of Pakistan will provide local hospitality, including board and lodging whereas, international airfare will be borne by UGC. The last date of receiving of application in the Ministry is 20th January, 2010.

You are requested to recommend the names of suitable candidates from your University to participate in the above said Debate Contest.

The nominations, alongwith bio-data, indicating topic for the debate contest, should reach to The Section Officer (IC-I), Room No. 504, University Grants Commission, Bahadurshah Zafar Marg, New Delhi-110002 by 19-01-2010.

The Secretariat of the South Asian" Association for Regional Cooperation presents its compliments to the Ministries of Foreign/External Affairs of the Member States of SAARC and has the honour to refer to former's Note Verbale of even number (fax msgNo, 1997/8/271) dated 4 September 2009 (copy enclosed) regarding the follow-up actions to be taken as per paragraph 18. under Item No. VIII of the "Report of the Fifth Meeting of the Committee of Heads of University Grants Commission/Equivalent Bodies {Male, 1-2 June 2009),

The esteemed Ministries are requested to take urgent action by conveying their participation to the Debate Contest slated to be organized in Pakistan tentatively in February-March 2010 with the details of the participants for onward transmission to Pakistan for necessary action at their end. It may be noted that the dates of the Sixth Meeting of the Committee of Heads of University Grants Commission/Equivalent Bodies have already been announced, which would be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 5-4 March 2010 and the follow up actions of the Fifth Meeting will have to be reported to the Sixth Meeting.

Early action by all the Member States will be highly appreciated.

The Secretarial of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation presents its compliments to the Ministries of Foreign/External Affairs of the Member States of SAARC and with reference to the Report of the Fifth Meeting of the Committee of Heads of University Grants Commission/Equrvfllent Bodies (Male on 1-2 June 2009) has the honour to state that on item No. VIII. Consideration of matters relating to open and distance learning in the Member States of SAARC, the following was agreed upon:

J 8. The delegation of Pakistan reaffirmed the commitment to host a Debate Contest on mu&ally agreed topics to be organized among SAARC University students which will be sent to the Secretariat for circulation among Member States for their approval and with the request to nominate participants for the Debate Contest. Pakistan will notify the dates for the debate contest soon afl&r it receives the nominations and suggested topic/s from Member States."

The Secretariat has the honour to inform the esteemed Ministries that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan has forwarded the following topics for the SAARC Debate Contest to.be held in Islamabad tentatively in February/March 2010:
